The Overdose Prevention Committee (OPC), in collaboration with the Pediatric Interest Group (PIG), welcomed Dr. Yoshihiro Ozaki, board-certified in General Pediatrics and Pediatric Hospital Medicine, for an educational presentation titled Acute Cannabis Intoxication in Children.

More than 50 medical students attended the session, where Dr. Ozaki discussed cannabis composition and its mechanisms of action, current regulations, evidence-based clinical uses and potential effects of cannabis exposure in children. He also reviewed the signs of acute cannabis intoxication in children, along with approaches to diagnosis and management.

Dr. Ozaki presented several real-world patient cases to guide medical students through the process of evaluating symptoms, gathering relevant patient histories, identifying potential exposures, and making clinical management decisions. Drawing from his clinical experience, These cases provided valuable insight into the challenges of recognizing and treating cannabis intoxication in pediatric patients.

The presentation concluded with a Q&A session, during which medical students asked about the role of Child Protective Services, potential long-term consequences of cannabis exposure and considerations for diagnostic laboratory testing.

The collaborative event brought together medical students interested in pediatrics, overdose prevention and other areas of medicine to learn about acute cannabis intoxication in children. Through discussions of harm reduction, child safety and developmentally informed care, medical students gained practical knowledge to help them recognize, evaluate and manage pediatric cannabis intoxication during clinical rotations and future practice.
