Student Doctor Cameron DeLaere Selected to Participate in NBOME Student Experience Panel

August 13, 2024

Congratulations to Cameron DeLaere, third-year medical student at the California Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine (CHSU-COM), for being the first student from CHSU to serve on the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) Student Experience Panel.

“I am deeply appreciative of Dr. John Graneto for his support and for nominating me for this opportunity. I was motivated to join the panel by a desire to give back to the osteopathic medical community that has supported me. The guidance and experiences shared by mentors and peers before me have greatly influenced my journey…I hope to leverage this experience to advocate for positive changes and to develop skills that will benefit my future medical career.”

He noted Dr. Krista Edmiston (Microbiology) and Dr. Francisco Ibarra (Pharmacology), for being exceptional faculty members who embody dedication and excellence in every aspect of their work. “They consistently demonstrate what true leadership means through their unwavering commitment to both their field and student success,” he said.

The NBOME, or National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners, is the organization responsible for creating and administering the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX). This series of exams, which includes COMLEX Levels 1, 2, and 3, is a critical component of the path to becoming a licensed osteopathic physician.

The Student Experience Panel (SEP) was established by the NBOME in 2021 with the aim of obtaining direct feedback from osteopathic medical students regarding their experiences with their initiatives, products, and services. The SEP serves as a crucial platform for students to voice their perspectives and contribute to the enhancement of the examination process.

To be considered for the SEP, candidates must be nominated by the dean of their COM and commit to serving a term of one academic year. After receiving a nomination, candidates are required to submit their resumé for review. The panel is reconstituted annually, although the NBOME does not publicly disclose the number of applicants or those accepted.

Cameron feels honored to have been chosen for the panel.

“I wouldn’t have even been in a position to take this role, or be in medical school at all, if it weren’t for the unwavering support from my Mom and Dad, as well as my wife Hayden.  They have shown an immeasurable amount of support throughout medical school, and I will always continue to acknowledge them, because they are the ones that make me the luckiest man on the planet.”
