Surgeon Panel Hosted by the CHSU-COM Chapter of the Association of Women Surgeons

January 28, 2026

The California Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine (CHSU-COM) chapter of the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) recently hosted a surgeon panel that gave medical students an inside look at the realities of residency training and work–life balance across a range of surgical specialties.

The surgeons shared candid insights into how they chose their specialties, the factors that shaped those decisions, and what their day-to-day clinical and operative responsibilities look like in practice.

They spoke openly about both the challenges and rewards of surgical careers, helping to demystify common concerns about lifestyle, training intensity, and long-term fulfillment.

In particular, the women panelists offered thoughtful perspectives on managing parenthood, emphasizing the importance of being intentional with the limited time they have with their children. A recurring piece of advice was recognizing one’s value as a physician and using available resources, such as outsourcing household tasks, to prioritize meaningful time with family, even if it is just a few hours each day.

The surgeons also highlighted the importance of advocating for oneself and shaping a work schedule that aligns with personal goals and desired lifestyle. Following the panel, students rotated through small-group discussions with each surgeon, creating an open and supportive environment to ask personalized questions, seek mentorship, and receive practical, career-specific guidance.

There were lots of laughs, honest conversations, stories told and delicious Mexican food devoured! We truly appreciate the support of these physicians for our students and for taking time out of their busy lives to to share a part of themselves with us.

The surgeon panel was organized by CHSU medical students Giana Davlantes, AWS President; Audrey Feldman, AWS Vice President; Natasha Chandra, AWS Treasurer; and Aarti Dixit, AWS Secretary.
